We had a little excitement out at Bird TV Saturday afternoon: a mink visited the bird feeding station.
I was lucky enough to have brought in my camera and was at the right place at the right time. The mink wasn’t interested in birds, it was after something a bit furrier. It caught itself a chipmunk, which, unfortunately for the chipmunk, was out on a cold wintery day.
After a bit of a struggle (the chippie wasn’t going to submit calmly), the mink took off with its prize, disappearing into the brush pile.
I went out a little bit later to view the scene of the crime. The last evidence of the chipmunk could be seen outside a small entry hole under the brush pile.
How luck were Holly and I to be there to witness nature in action! You just never know what you will see when you are out here at Dahlem! And I just can’t say it enough: build a bird feeding station with water and a brush pile, and Things Will Happen!
